Exclamation points in email marketing subject lines: Yes or No?

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer:

In my research on email marketing subject lines, I found that exclamation points can increase open rates.

I studied over 31,000 email marketing subject lines for my doctoral dissertation. I was looking for linguistic patterns that lead to greater success. For subject lines, this means I wanted to know what leads to higher open rates.

One of the aspects that I studied was exclamation points in subject lines.

The first thing I found was that 50% of the subject lines in my data use at least one exclamation point (usually – but not always – coming at the end of a sentence or the end of the subject line). But less than 1% use multiple exclamation points (!!!).

When I compared the use of exclamation points to open rates, though, something very interesting emerged. Exclamation points increase the open rate by almost 4%.

This is good news for email marketers. An increase of 4% in open rate can be huge – especially if they are sending hundreds or thousands of emails. This is also good news because using an exclamation point is an easy way for marketers to add urgency to their subject lines. I’ll have a more in-depth post about adding urgency in a later post, but for now I’ll say that it is something that marketers certainly want to do when promoting a sale.
